Hello, gm & gn to all the contributors. Here's an article looking back on the past 3 months of NameDAO, DigitDAO and EmojiDAO. There were some achievements, with many downfalls. We want to rethink them and give out our thoughts on what's next for NameDAO, DigitDAO, and EmojiDAO.
Also, we are writing this article on behalf of all the builders of DAOs, we believe there are hard-learned lessons that may prove useful to you as well.
Here begins.
Muddled relationship between NameDAO and DigitDAO, and .bit team
Let's be clear:
NameDAO is a DAO project initiated by the .bit team, whereas .bit team is only the initiator and first sponsor of the project. And DigitDAO is the most popular NameDAO case to date.
In the past, whenever and wherever we wanted to introduce people to DigitDAO, the real case of NameDAO, we would have to go all the way through what is .bit, what is NameDAO, and then, to DigitDAO. This would make all the DigitDAO members confused about this community, and question its authenticity. We have revamped the vision and mission for NameDAO and DigitDAO, based on this issue, you will find them in the later section.
Lack of functional channel of marketing
As a project initiated by .bit, NameDAO from the ground up, has the same group of audience as .bit had in the past. However, this group of people may not be the right person for DAO, and we didn't have proper ways to connect real DAO contributors, less say other DAO communities.
Unclear vision and mission with no members of common pursuit in DigitDAO
Upon the foundation of NameDAO, it was difficult for us to set a vision and mission for DigitDAO, which resulted in:
Few members have actually noticed the vision and mission we have set, but witnessed that we didn't follow these, and they quit;
Most members didn't have a consensus on what is DigitDAO, some even say it's just a marketing tool/community for .bit.
We have lost you, real contributors in the process. And we really want to make it up for the lost things and lost people.
Unfriendly or even uncanny onboarding mechanism
Currently, if anyone wants to join DigitDAO, he/she will have to invite 10 different wallet addresses to register digits-only .bit, using his own .bit as a referall. This onboarding method has blocked away many people who are only interested in DAO, but not so familiar with .bit. Also, looking at a DAO's perspective, this is not a very DAO-ish onboarding method.
Lack of X to earn mechanism
DAO can be seen as an organization that "Based on consensus, perform an action". DigitDAO may be seen as an organization with a vision and mission (consensus), but still, we lack an action mechanism propelling people to do things. We need to figure out what members can do in our community, and what we can offer back to them. Otherwise, the community will be forever lifeless.
Changes we are going to make
We have revamped the vision and mission for NameDAO and DigitDAO, whereas:
NameDAO is a DAO project initiated by .bit team, whereas .bit team is only the initiator and first sponsor of the project;
DigitDAO is a case of NameDAO, and the by far the most popular one;
DigitDAO's vision is to become a self-governed on-chain digital city, with a transparent governance structure, treasury, and self-sufficient economic system;
DigitDAO's mission is to become a DAO-tools experiment place, incubate DAO-tools, research fair on-chain governance structure, regenerative economic model, and other topics which can contribute to the building of on-chain digital city.
And here are the things we are going to do in the next 3 months:
Modify the onboarding mechanism;
Build X to earn / bounty system;
Hold activities enhancing consensus and the DigitDAO / NameDAO story;
Build marketing relay channels and materials.
Starting again
In the past 3 months, we have seen much. We want to admit those errors we have committed and carry on the achievements. We'd like to have you, contributors to join us again, and discuss the next steps for the NameDAO and DigitDAO with us, together.
